Searching the Raleigh County Court Docket
No single search box holds every Raleigh County court docket. You have to know which court has the case. The West Virginia Court Records Access page points the public toward the right tool. It routes users to WVPASS for Circuit Court records. Magistrate Court records go through the Magistrate Case Record Search, or MCRS. Beckley ordinance cases belong to city court and its linked portal. Family Court takes extra care, since much of the underlying file is confidential. Federal cases live in PACER, not in either state search.
Start with a case number if you have one. It separates people with similar names and often reveals the court level. A name search needs checking too. Confirm Raleigh County, the caption, the filing date, the case type, and the court before relying on a result. Search tools are finding aids, not certified files. The right clerk supplies copies and resolves any gaps.
- Read the citation, notice, or caption and identify Circuit, Family, Magistrate, municipal, or federal court.
- Open WVPASS for Circuit matters or MCRS for Magistrate matters. Use the exact case number when possible.
- Confirm Raleigh County, the parties, case code, filing date, and court location.
- Read the full event history and case event schedule. A single result line may not show the outcome.
- Ask the correct clerk for a missing document, plain copy, or certified copy.
Raleigh County Docket Search Routes
Two state tools split the Raleigh County court docket between them. WVPASS opened for public Circuit Court access in 2025. Official material says it covers all West Virginia counties. Public Circuit documents go back to 1999, subject to access and availability limits. Registration and searching cost nothing. Downloads carry a small charge. Search filters can change, so follow the labels in the live service rather than assume a filter exists.
MCRS handles the Magistrate side. It verifies searches by first and last name or case number. It returns no more than 30 results and shows case information rather than every filed paper. The detail view can include parties, charges or civil amounts, a case event schedule, and docket entries. Expect a CAPTCHA before the form. The official MCRS instructions send users to the county clerk for copies.
| Route | Raleigh County Coverage | Best Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| WVPASS | Public Circuit Court records | Circuit Clerk |
| MCRS | Magistrate civil and criminal matters | Magistrate Clerk |
| Beckley portal | Beckley ordinance citations and court accounts | Beckley Municipal Court |
| PACER | Federal cases | Federal clerk |
Inside a Raleigh County Court Docket
A Raleigh County court docket is a chronological index of case activity. It can show the filing that opened a case, service, appearances, settings, orders, and a final outcome. The paper behind an entry may not appear. MCRS, for example, can show that an order or service event exists. The Magistrate Clerk holds the copy. An event marked closed may mean only that the hearing ended. The whole case may still be open.
| Case number | A court identifier such as 19-C-140; Magistrate formats differ. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Public names and roles, subject to privacy and confidentiality rules. |
| Docket entries | Dated lines for filings, service, notices, orders, and payments. |
| Event schedule | Date, time, room, judge, event type, and closure reason when shown. |
| Court and judge | The court location and assigned judicial officer. |
| Disposition | The court's stated result, which must not be inferred from a charge or claim. |
Raleigh County Court Case Codes
West Virginia Circuit and Family case numbers usually mix the last two digits of the filing year with a type code, a sequence, and sometimes a judge or division suffix. The official Circuit Clerk manual gives samples like 19-C-140 and 19-F-30-2. The year comes first. The letter marks the case type. A code helps route a Raleigh County docket request. It will not tell you the full subject or the result.
- C
- General civil case. The label alone does not identify the dispute.
- F
- Felony matter in Circuit Court.
- D
- Domestic-relations case, with special public-access limits.
- C-AP
- Civil appeal from Magistrate Court.
- JD
- Juvenile delinquency category, generally confidential.
Magistrate records follow other patterns and event codes. Copy the number exactly. Take it from MCRS, a citation, or the clerk. When a felony moves from Magistrate Court to Circuit Court, write down both linked numbers, since each level may preserve a distinct part of the timeline.
Courts That Keep Dockets in Raleigh County
Raleigh County sits in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit. The West Virginia Circuit Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court. Family Court handles domestic relations. Magistrate Court takes limited civil claims, misdemeanors, state-law traffic cases, and early felony events. Municipal courts hear city ordinance cases. They sit outside the unified state judiciary. Get the level right. Each clerk and search tool holds a different slice of the Raleigh County court docket.
| Court | Docket Covers | Where to Search |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Court | Felonies, general civil cases, appeals, and other general-jurisdiction matters | WVPASS or Circuit Clerk |
| Family Court | Divorce, custody, support, and related domestic matters | Public orders and indices through Circuit Clerk |
| Magistrate Court | Claims up to $20,000, misdemeanors, state traffic, and preliminary felony events | MCRS or Magistrate Clerk |
| Beckley Municipal Court | Beckley ordinance violations | City portal or municipal clerk |
Two Raleigh County Clerk Counters
The Raleigh County Judicial Center at 222 Main Street houses the Circuit, Family, and Magistrate court offices listed by the state directory. A block away, the historic Raleigh County Courthouse at 215 Main Street houses the County Clerk. That short gap causes real routing errors. The Circuit Clerk keeps Circuit and Family case material, the Magistrate Clerk keeps Magistrate files, and the County Clerk records deeds, liens, estates, and recorded instruments.
A court judgment can appear in two contexts. The case judgment belongs to the court docket. A later judgment lien may instead be recorded as a county instrument. Ask for each by name. Do not assume one counter can search the other system.

How to Find Court Dates and Settings
No single calendar covers every Raleigh County court. For a Magistrate case, the MCRS case detail includes a CASE EVENT SCHEDULE with the event type, date, time, location, judge, and a closure reason when available. Circuit and Family events may appear in WVPASS when indexed. Beckley Municipal Court publishes regular Monday and Wednesday session information. Holidays and emergency closures can still change it.
Check the online event against the latest notice. Then call the right clerk before you travel. A continuance moves a setting. A closed event is not always a closed case. Fourteenth Circuit terms begin on the second Monday in January, May, and September, but a term date is not a hearing notice. The full Raleigh County Court Dates page explains the confirmation paths.
Raleigh County Docket Filing Scale
The 2025 West Virginia judicial annual report shows how many record types can feed a Raleigh County court docket. Its Circuit criminal table lists 501 felony filings, 6 Magistrate appeals, 116 misdemeanors, and 236 other criminal filings. That is 859 listed criminal filings. Count filings, not people. These are not convictions, and they are not pending cases.
Family matters make up a large share of that workload: 335 divorces and 396 domestic-violence matters in a single year. Access rules vary widely between those categories. Counts describe volume only. They cannot replace the Raleigh County docket itself, and they prove nothing about the outcome of any single case.
Raleigh County Docket System Changes
Access tools have been shifting fast. WVPASS went live for public Circuit records in March 2025. The state later announced CourtOne, a unified case-management and e-filing platform built to replace the older separate systems used by Circuit, Family, and Magistrate Courts. Not every planned feature is necessarily running in Raleigh County yet, so treat the announcement as a roadmap rather than a finished rollout. In July 2026, the judiciary added lower-court data dashboards refreshed daily. Those dashboards display preliminary aggregate statistics, not case dockets. For a named case, rely on WVPASS, MCRS, and the clerks. Always check portal instructions against the live screen, because labels, logins, and coverage can shift during the transition.
Public Access to Court Dockets
West Virginia starts from a presumption of broad access to court records. Broad does not mean total. Statutes, rules, and court orders shield juvenile files. They also shield most of the underlying Family Court record, sealed material, and private information. So a public index entry or signed order can sit right beside confidential material. The pleadings, exhibits, recordings, or transcripts behind it may stay closed.
Key Rules:
West Virginia Code §51-4-2 opens court records and papers to inspection and copying unless another rule applies.
West Virginia Code §48-1-303 keeps public Family Court orders distinct from confidential underlying filings.
West Virginia Code §49-5-103 restricts juvenile records and permits only controlled disclosures.
Raleigh County Restricted Docket Results
When a Raleigh County docket search comes up empty, the cause could be the wrong system. It might also be slow indexing, a transfer, or a lawful access limit. Juvenile records are confidential under West Virginia law. A Family Court order and its index can be public while the pleadings, exhibits, recordings, and transcripts behind them remain closed. A civil court can restrict access by order. An expungement order seals the criminal court records it covers. Never try to work around a restriction. Instead, ask the Circuit Clerk or Magistrate Clerk whether the record exists. Ask which parts are public and what authority controls a denial. Someone with an authorized role may have a formal route that the general public does not. And just because a sensitive field appeared on screen does not mean it should be copied or shared.
Raleigh County Docket Copy Costs
Fees differ by task: searching, downloading, copying, certification, filing, and payment each carry their own charge. West Virginia law sets a $1 per-page Circuit Clerk charge. It applies to certain copies or papers leaving the office. Magistrate rules state $0.25 per photocopied page and $2 per faxed page. WVPASS describes its download charge only as small or nominal. No amount is given in the launch material. Ask for the current total before you order.
| Item | Researched Amount | Check With |
|---|---|---|
| Magistrate photocopy | $0.25 per page | Magistrate Clerk |
| Magistrate fax | $2 per page | Magistrate Clerk |
| Certain Circuit copies | $1 per page | Circuit Clerk |
| Certification | Not located | Circuit Clerk |
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office
The official directory names Brianne Steele as Raleigh County Circuit Clerk. Her office keeps the Circuit and Family Court records. It answers local questions about docket entries, paper files, public Family Court orders, and certification. Kathryn B. Blankenship is the listed Raleigh County Magistrate Court Clerk. Her office is the local route for Magistrate traffic, misdemeanor, preliminary felony, small-claims, and other limited-jurisdiction files. Put any written request in shape before it goes out. Identify the case number, court level, case type, date range, and the exact entries or documents you need. Say whether you want a plain or certified copy. Include a return method and ask for a fee estimate. If no case number is known, give one full known name and a narrow filing-year range. Skip sensitive identifiers unless an official form requires them.
Raleigh County Court Dockets by City
The 2020 Census place table lists five incorporated places in Raleigh County. They are Beckley, Mabscott, Sophia, Lester, and Rhodell. Beckley runs a verified Municipal Court with an online citation portal, but Mabscott, Sophia, and Lester post no separate public municipal docket portal. Rhodell needs a special caveat. Official material records its dissolution in 2024. For any of the smaller places, confirm the issuing agency and the citation caption before deciding where a matter belongs. That choice determines whether it goes to the town or the Raleigh County Magistrate Clerk.

Map and Directions to the Raleigh County Judicial Center
Circuit, Family, and Magistrate Court records are kept at the Raleigh County Judicial Center, 222 Main Street in downtown Beckley, which opened in April 2012 across Main Street from the older 1936 Art Deco courthouse. That older building at 215 Main Street houses the County Clerk's land-record and vital-statistics office, not the court clerks, so a docket request belongs at the Judicial Center rather than the courthouse across the street.

The Circuit Clerk page also describes a noon-to-1 p.m. closure, so calling ahead before a midday visit is worthwhile. Identify whether the matter is Circuit/Family or Magistrate before joining a line, since both clerks share the same building but keep separate dockets and phone lines.
